Norwegian Cruise Line is one of the three biggest names in mass-market cruising alongside Royal Caribbean and Carnival, and on price it sits between them. The stat tiles and fleet table above come from our catalogue: 21 ships and 592 sailings in the next 12 months, with fares captured every morning. This guide explains what those numbers mean, how the fleet splits by class, and where the headline fares leave money out.
NCL built its brand on Freestyle Cruising: no fixed dining times, no assigned tables and no formal dress code. You choose a restaurant each night and book specialty venues as you go. If set seatings and formal nights put you off cruising, this is the line that removed them first.
NCL is also the most practical big-ship line for solo travelers. Norwegian Epic, the Breakaway and Breakaway Plus ships and the Prima class carry Studio cabins, small inside rooms priced for one person, with a shared Studio lounge where solo guests meet. On most other lines a solo traveler pays a heavy single supplement on a double cabin.
The line belongs to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH), which also owns Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. If you like NCL's style but want smaller ships and more included, those two sister brands are covered in our luxury cruise lines ranking.
The fleet table above sorts the ships by age, size and next fare. Here is how they group, newest first.
Norwegian Prima (2022) and Norwegian Viva opened the class with fewer passengers per ton of ship than earlier NCL builds. Norwegian Aqua (2025) and Norwegian Luna (2026) are the stretched versions at about 156,000 gross tons. Norwegian Aura is the next newcomer in our data, with first departures listed for May 2027. If you searched for NCL's newest ship, these are the ones.
The Breakaway Plus quartet are NCL's biggest ships by tonnage: Norwegian Escape (2015), Norwegian Joy (2017), Norwegian Bliss (2018) and Norwegian Encore (2019), each carrying around 4,000 guests or more at double occupancy. Their predecessors, Norwegian Breakaway (2013) and Norwegian Getaway (2014), share the same layout on a slightly smaller hull.
Norwegian Epic (2009) is a one-off at nearly 156,000 tons. It introduced Studios and is now one of the better-value big ships in the fleet.
The four Jewel-class ships, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Pearl and Norwegian Gem, are mid-size at about 93,500 tons and do much of NCL's longer, port-heavy sailing. Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star are slightly smaller sisters from 2001–2002. The oldest ships, Norwegian Spirit (1998) and Norwegian Sun (2001), carry about 2,000 guests and work the more exotic routes. Pride of America is a US-flagged ship that sails only around Hawaii.
The Haven is a keycard-only suite complex on most NCL ships. Guests get a private lounge and sun deck with its own pool, a dedicated restaurant on the newer ships, and butler and concierge service, while still having access to every venue on the ship. It is NCL's answer to people who want a big-ship itinerary with a small-ship feel.
Haven suites sit in a separate price tier from the "suite" fares in our tables, which track the cheapest suite on each sailing. Compare Haven prices sailing by sailing, because the gap to a standard balcony varies widely by ship and season.
NCL has long sold its fares with bundled perks, first branded Free at Sea and more recently More at Sea. The idea is the same: on top of the cruise, the fare includes or offers a choice of extras such as a drinks package, specialty dining, Wi-Fi, shore excursion credit or a reduced fare for extra guests in the cabin. The exact perks, how many you get and which fares qualify change often, sometimes weekly, so check the offer on the day you book.
What does not change is the mechanism: the perks are "free" but the service charges attached to them usually are not. A bundled drinks package typically carries its own service charge, and specialty dining and excursion credits can have conditions. Some fares let you drop the perks for a lower price, which is worth comparing if you do not drink alcohol or plan to explore ashore on your own.
The regions chart above shows the split. Caribbean and Bahamas sailings make up 281 of NCL's 592 departures in the next 12 months, almost half, and Bermuda adds another 49. Alaska (46), the Mediterranean (41) and Hawaii (36) follow, with smaller programs in Northern Europe, the Greek Isles, the Mexican Riviera, Asia, and Australia and New Zealand.
NCL's busiest homeport by far is Miami with 123 departures, followed by Port Canaveral (86). See cruises from Miami for parking and hotels. Honolulu and Seattle have 36 each, New York 32, Philadelphia 25, Los Angeles 21 and Jacksonville 19. In Europe, NCL sails mainly from Barcelona (18), Civitavecchia for Rome (17), Ravenna (17), Southampton (13) and Lisbon (10). For the full picture by region, see Caribbean cruises and Mediterranean cruises.
Great Stirrup Cay is NCL's private island in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas, and it is the most frequent port of call in our NCL data: 211 sailings stop there, against 84 for Nassau. Expect a beach day with optional paid extras such as cabanas and water sports. Western Caribbean sailings often call instead, or as well, at Harvest Caye, NCL's resort destination in Belize, which appears on 56 itineraries.
NCL's loyalty program is Latitudes Rewards, with seven tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador. You earn points for the nights you sail, and benefits build from onboard recognition at the lower tiers to perks such as priority embarkation and complimentary extras at the top. Status is linked to your NCL account, so book under the same name and loyalty number each time.
The median fare across NCL's sailings in our catalogue is €165 per person per night for the cheapest cabin in each category. That puts NCL above Carnival (€132) and MSC (€160) and below Royal Caribbean (€181). Inside cabins have a median of €131 per night and balconies €197. The lowest fare we captured is from €183 per person for a 4-night Bahamas cruise on Norwegian Getaway from Port Canaveral. All prices are the cheapest cabin, per person, captured on the date shown on the page.
Headline NCL fares mislead in two ways. First, taxes, port fees and the daily service charge are added per person per night, which on a short sailing can add a large share to the base fare. Second, the Free at Sea or More at Sea perks often carry their own service charges, so a "free" drinks package is not free at checkout. Compare the total, not the advertised fare.
On timing, November is the cheapest month in our data (median €112 per night), followed by December and January (€124). Prices climb through spring to a peak in July (€251) and June (€245), when Alaska and Europe sailings dominate. By region, the Bahamas (median €110 per night) and Mexican Riviera (€92) are the bargains; Hawaii (€345) and Northern Europe (€331) are the most expensive.
NCL reprices often, and perk offers change even when the base fare does not. Rather than checking the NCL website every day, use what this page already tracks:
If you are flexible, start with a November or January sailing from Miami or Port Canaveral and set an alert. That is where NCL's lowest fares cluster in our data.
Norwegian Cruise Line operates 21 ships in our database, the largest being Norwegian Encore at 169,116 GT.
The median fare across the next 12 months of Norwegian Cruise Line sailings is about €165 per person per night for the cheapest cabin, before taxes and gratuities.
Across current sailings the United States booking site is on average the cheapest, with a 0% gap to the most expensive market. Pro members see the market for each sailing.
Norwegian Cruise Line's upcoming sailings are concentrated in Caribbean (42%), Bahamas (26%), Bermuda (12%), Alaska (11%), Mediterranean (10%).
Norwegian Cruise Line is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NYSE ticker NCLH), which also owns the upscale Oceania Cruises and the luxury Regent Seven Seas Cruises. The three brands share a parent company but run separate fleets, fares and loyalty programs.
The newest NCL ship with full specs in our catalogue is Norwegian Luna, built in 2026, the second of the enlarged Prima-class ships after Norwegian Aqua. Norwegian Aura is also in our sailing data, with its first departures listed for May 2027.
Freestyle Cruising is NCL's name for its no-schedule approach: there are no fixed dining times or assigned tables, and there is no formal dress code, so you eat when and where you like. It is the main reason people who dislike set seatings and formal nights choose NCL.
Across 592 NCL sailings in the next 12 months, the median cheapest-cabin fare in our data is €165 per person per night, and the cheapest fare we captured is €183 per person for a 4-night Bahamas cruise on Norwegian Getaway. Taxes, port fees and the daily service charge are usually added on top.
November is the cheapest month in our NCL data, with a median of €112 per person per night, followed by December and January at €124. July is the most expensive month at €251 per night, driven by Alaska, Europe and summer school holidays.
The Haven is NCL's ship-within-a-ship suite complex: a keycard-access area with its own lounge, sun deck and pool, plus a private restaurant on the newer ships and butler and concierge service. You get a quiet enclave while keeping access to the whole ship.
Yes. Great Stirrup Cay is NCL's private island in the Bahamas, and it appears on 211 of the NCL sailings in our catalogue. Many western Caribbean itineraries also call at Harvest Caye, NCL's private resort destination in Belize.
NCL's loyalty program, Latitudes Rewards, has seven tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Sapphire, Diamond and Ambassador. You move up by earning points on cruises you take, and the perks grow at each tier.
