The Mediterranean is the one cruise region you can sail twelve months a year, but the experience and the price change sharply with the calendar. Below we explain when fares are lowest according to the prices we capture every night, how Western and Eastern itineraries differ, which lines sail from which home ports, and where port days get complicated. The seasonality chart, line table and sailings table on this page update from the same data.
There are three seasons, and they trade weather against price and crowds.
Peak (July–August). Hot, often above 35 °C ashore in Athens or Naples, with the biggest crowds in Santorini, Dubrovnik and the Vatican. It is also the most expensive time: in our data August is the priciest departure month at a median of about €216 per person per night, with July close behind at €204.
Shoulder (April–June, September–October). The best balance for most people. Seas are warm enough to swim from late May, and evenings on deck are pleasant. In our fares, May and June sit at a median of about €179–186 per night, a clear step down from summer. September is the surprise: it is priced almost like peak season (about €206 per night), so if you want shoulder-season value, May beats September.
Winter (November–March). Fewer ships, cooler and sometimes wet days in Genoa or Marseille, but the cities are quiet and museums have no queues. In our data the cheapest departure month is November at a median of €120 per night, with December and February almost identical. That is roughly 45% less per night than August. See the seasonality chart below for the month-by-month bars.
Western Mediterranean cruises loop Spain, France and Italy: typically Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa or La Spezia, Civitavecchia for Rome, Naples, and often Palma or Valletta. Ports are close together, so a 7-night trip usually has just one sea day, and almost every stop is a berth rather than a tender. This is the easiest first Med cruise and the one most ships run in winter.
Eastern Mediterranean cruises cover Greece, Turkey and the Adriatic: Piraeus for Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, Kusadasi for Ephesus, Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Split. Distances are longer, so expect more sea days and earlier all-aboard times. Tender ports are more common here, and the season is shorter. Most big-ship Greek Isles sailings run from spring to autumn.
Adriatic cruises are a subset of the Eastern Med, starting from Trieste, Ravenna, Venice-area terminals or Bari and calling at Croatia, Montenegro and Greece. If you want Venice, Dubrovnik and Kotor in one week, this is the route to filter for in find a cruise.
MSC is the biggest player by far. In our catalogue it has the largest share of Mediterranean departures and sails from more than 25 embarkation ports, led by Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia and Naples. That spread means you can join the same loop in several countries. Like Costa, its Italian rival, MSC runs year-round from Genoa and Barcelona, with departures in every month of the next 12. Its Med fleet ranges from the older Lirica-class ships to MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia. Compare it on the MSC line page.
Norwegian Cruise Line runs Greek Isles and Western Med itineraries from Civitavecchia, Ravenna, Barcelona and Piraeus. Cunard sails from Civitavecchia, Trieste and Barcelona, as well as round trips from Southampton.
The big American brands bring ships over for the summer season. In our data, Celebrity sails mostly from Barcelona, Civitavecchia and Piraeus. Royal Caribbean leans on Civitavecchia and Barcelona, and Princess on Civitavecchia, Barcelona and Piraeus. Virgin Voyages splits between Piraeus and Barcelona. Disney and Holland America run shorter seasons from the same hubs. Luxury and small-ship lines (Silversea, Seabourn, Regent, Windstar, Ponant) reach smaller harbors that big ships cannot enter. See luxury cruise lines for those.
Some famous names are not where the ship docks. Rome means Civitavecchia and a long transfer: about three hours of travel for five hours in the city. Florence means Livorno, roughly 90 minutes away, with Pisa closer for a shorter day. Athens from Piraeus and Barcelona, Marseille, Naples and Valletta are easy: you can be sightseeing within half an hour.
Tender ports add time at both ends. In Santorini ships anchor in the caldera and boats carry you to Fira, then a cable car or the steps take you up. In Cannes and Villefranche you tender in too. Budget an extra hour before all-aboard and avoid tight independent tours. Some itineraries also include an overnight in Istanbul or a late departure from Venice-area ports, which gives you an evening ashore.
Independent tours from the port are usually cheaper than ship excursions and smaller in group size. Each port card below links to tours you can book directly. For MSC itineraries, the MSC excursions page groups them by port.
All prices on this page are for the cheapest cabin, per person, in euros, as captured on the date shown next to each sailing.
Pack comfortable walking shoes for cobbled old towns and something that covers your shoulders and knees for churches such as St Peter's and St Mark's. Most Med ports are in the Schengen area, so most travelers need no visa beyond their passport. If your route includes Turkey, Montenegro or North Africa, check the entry rules for your nationality.

In our fare data the cheapest departure month is November, at a median of about €120 per person per night for the cheapest cabin, with December and February almost level. August is the most expensive month at a median of about €216 per night, so a winter sailing costs roughly 45% less per night.
May and the first half of June give you warm weather, long days and fares below the summer peak (a median of about €179–186 per night in our data versus €204–216 in July and August). September is just as pleasant but in our data it is priced close to peak summer, so it is not the bargain many guides suggest.
Western Med cruises loop Spain, France and Italy (Barcelona, Marseille, Genoa, Civitavecchia for Rome, Naples) with short hops and few sea days. Eastern Med cruises cover Greece, Croatia, Turkey and the Adriatic, with longer distances, more sea days and more tender ports such as Santorini.
MSC dominates by volume and sails the Med all year from Italian, Spanish and French ports; Costa, also Italian, does the same. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Norwegian, Virgin Voyages, Disney, Holland America and Cunard bring ships for the spring-to-autumn season, mostly from Barcelona, Civitavecchia and Piraeus.

In our data a 7-night cruise from Barcelona starts from €519 per person for the cheapest cabin, with a median of about €183 per night. Prices are the cheapest cabin per person in euros, captured on the date shown on each sailing.
Large cruise ships are no longer allowed through the Giudecca Canal and St Mark's Basin, so big-ship Adriatic cruises now start or call at Trieste, Ravenna or terminals outside the historic centre. Check the exact embarkation terminal and transfer time before you book flights and hotels.
Rome's cruise port is Civitavecchia, about 80 km from the city, which means roughly 90 minutes each way by coach or train. On a port day that leaves about five hours in Rome, so plan one or two sights rather than a full tour.
Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Greece and Croatia are all in the Schengen area, so most travelers with EU, UK, US, Canadian or Australian passports need no visa for a typical Med cruise. Turkey, Montenegro and North African ports have their own rules, so check entry requirements for your passport if your itinerary calls there.
Across 15+ upcoming sailings the cheapest cabins start at €819 per person; the cheapest departure month right now is November 2026 at a median €96 per night.
