A river cruise is a week or two on a small ship that follows a river from one city to another, stopping almost every day. You unpack once and walk off the gangway into a different old town each morning: river ships tie up at town quays, often minutes from the market square, with no tenders or shuttle rides from a container port.
The ships are small. A typical European river ship carries roughly 100 to 190 guests, because locks and low bridges limit how long, wide and tall it can be. There are no casinos, water slides, production shows or sea days. The scenery is the entertainment: vineyards, castles and villages slide past a few hundred meters away.
Fares include more than on most ocean ships. Most European river lines include a guided excursion in nearly every port and Wi-Fi, and many add wine and beer with meals. The price per night looks higher than on a mainstream ocean ship until you add the drinks, tours and tips you would buy at sea.
Two things are unique to rivers. First, locks: on the Danube, Main and Moselle the ship rises and falls through dozens of them, which is part of the fun. Second, water level. After a dry summer, levels can drop too low for loaded ships on parts of the Rhine, Elbe and Danube; after heavy rain, they can rise so high that ships no longer fit under bridges. Lines then swap guests between two ships, run coaches between ports or stay docked and tour by bus, so check the line's policy on changed itineraries before booking a late-summer or autumn departure.
The classic first river cruise: Passau to Budapest via Vienna, Bratislava and the Wachau Valley, with Melk Abbey and the vineyards around Dürnstein. Longer trips run east through the Iron Gates gorge toward the Black Sea, or west via the Main–Danube Canal to Nuremberg.
Amsterdam to Basel, past Cologne, the castle-lined Middle Rhine Gorge with the Lorelei rock, Strasbourg and the Black Forest. In late November and December, the Rhine and Danube fill with Christmas market cruises.
A round trip from Paris to Normandy: Rouen, Honfleur, Monet's garden at Giverny and a long excursion to the D-Day landing beaches. Distances are short, so you get more time ashore.
Porto and the terraced port wine valley, a UNESCO-listed landscape of quintas and steep vineyards. The locks are among the deepest in Europe, so Douro ships are smaller, and most itineraries include a day trip into Spain to Salamanca. Summers are hot inland.
Lyon is the hub. South on the Rhône: Avignon, Arles and the Provence of lavender and Roman ruins. North on the Saône: Burgundy, with Beaune and its wine cellars. Pair it with the coast by adding a few days on the Mediterranean.
Berlin and Potsdam to Dresden, Meissen and the sandstone cliffs of Saxon Switzerland, with Prague reached by coach. The Elbe is the most water-sensitive river in Europe, so itineraries are often shorter and more flexible.
Vietnam and Cambodia: the Mekong Delta, Phnom Penh and, depending on water levels, Siem Reap for Angkor Wat. Trips usually include hotel stays in Ho Chi Minh City or Siem Reap.
Luxor to Aswan and back, past Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo and the Valley of the Kings. Most programs add Cairo and the Pyramids; traditional sailing boats called dahabiyas offer a slower alternative.
In the US, the Mississippi runs from New Orleans through plantation country to Memphis, St. Louis and on to the Upper Mississippi. In the Pacific Northwest, Columbia and Snake river cruises follow the Lewis and Clark route through the Columbia River Gorge and wine country. Both are sailed by American-flagged riverboats, some with paddlewheels.
River cruise companies differ less in ships than in what the fare includes and who sails with them. None of these lines is in our price database yet, so this is about positioning, not price. For the top end of the ocean market, see our luxury cruise lines ranking.
The best-known name and the biggest fleet on European rivers. Its Longships, built to a near-identical design for about 190 guests, mix French-balcony and full-veranda cabins. The fare includes a guided excursion in every port, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, and Wi-Fi. Guests must be 18 or over, and the tone is calm and culture-focused. Viking also sails the Nile, the Mekong and, with its own ship, the Mississippi.
Founded by river cruise veterans and known for food and wine, with a chef's table restaurant on most ships. Many cabins have "twin balconies": a French balcony plus a small outdoor one. Fares include wine and beer with meals, Wi-Fi, excursions in gentle, regular and active versions, and bikes on board. The wider AmaMagna sails the Danube, and selected sailings run with Adventures by Disney for families.
Part of the Globus family of travel brands. Its signature is the Panorama Suite: the beds face the river and a wall of glass slides open, making the whole cabin a balcony. Fares include drinks with lunch and dinner and a choice of classic, active or discovery-style excursions. Good value for space.
Owned by The Travel Corporation and the most decorative ships on the river, each styled individually with antiques, fabrics and art. Uniworld is genuinely all-inclusive: unlimited drinks including spirits, gratuities, excursions, Wi-Fi and airport transfers on the embarkation and disembarkation days. Itineraries cover Europe, the Nile and the Mekong.
An Australian-founded line, and a sister brand to Emerald. Its "Space-Ships" put a butler on every suite, and fares cover all drinks, gratuities, transfers and a broad excursion menu with electric bikes on board. Many suites have a glass-walled balcony that converts into an indoor sitting room in cooler months. Scenic sits in the luxury tier alongside Uniworld and Tauck.
Scenic's younger, more relaxed sister brand, priced below it. The modern Star-Ships have a heated pool on the sun deck that turns into a cinema at night, an unusual feature on a river ship. Fares include excursions, Wi-Fi and drinks with lunch and dinner. A good fit for a contemporary ship at a lighter price.
A family-owned American tour company dating back to the 1920s, which brings its guided-tour model onto the river. Each sailing carries Tauck Directors who handle everything ashore, and fares include drinks, excursions, gratuities and private events you would not get elsewhere. Expect high prices and a mostly North American crowd. Summer family departures are among the few river trips designed for children.
A Strasbourg-based family company with one of the largest fleets in Europe and the widest choice of rivers, including the Loire, the Gironde around Bordeaux and the Po near Venice. Drinks on board are included in the fare, French cooking is the focus, and excursions are often sold as an optional package. Many guests are French, so check which language the commentary is in.
A British tour operator with a strong river program, sold mainly to UK travelers. Packages usually bundle travel from the UK (flights or rail), transfers and a program of guided excursions, so the price is closer to door-to-door than most.
One of the biggest river operators in the US, with American-flagged ships and American crews on the Mississippi, the Columbia and Snake rivers, and coastal routes. The fleet mixes modern riverboats with balconies and classic paddlewheelers. Fares typically include shore excursions, wine and beer with lunch and dinner, an evening cocktail hour and Wi-Fi. The way to river cruise without flying to Europe.
Season matters more on rivers than at sea: the scenery is the point, and water levels decide the route.
Most river cruise ships follow the same plan: cabins on two or three decks, a restaurant on the lower or middle deck, a lounge with a panoramic bar at the front and a sun deck on top. Not every elevator reaches the sun deck, so ask if you have mobility needs.
The sun deck is the ship's best space, with loungers, a walking track and sometimes a small pool. It closes when the ship passes under low bridges and the wheelhouse is lowered. In busy ports ships often moor side by side, so the view from your window may be the ship next door, and you may walk through its lobby to reach the quay.
River cruises suit travelers who want culture, food and wine and a new town every day without packing; people who dislike crowds; and anyone worried about seasickness, since rivers are calm.
They suit you less if you travel with children, want nightlife, pools or shows, or like long lazy days at sea. Excursions often involve cobblestones and walking, which matters if mobility is limited. On a strict budget, a mainstream ocean ship in the Mediterranean will usually cost less per night, even after extras. Browse other cruise types to compare.
River ships are small and sell out earlier than ocean ships, so the best fares and cabin choice usually come with early booking. Last-minute deals exist but are rarer, and you take whatever cabin is left.
We do not track river fares yet. Our nightly capture covers ten ocean lines in the booking markets we capture (US, Europe and Australia today, more as sources come online), and we will add river cruise prices to the tracker. Until then, use Find a cruise to search ocean sailings, and see the plans for price alerts and longer price history.

A river ship carries roughly 100 to 190 guests, docks in or near town centers and sails past scenery all day, with no sea days, casinos or big production shows. Fares usually include more, often a shore excursion in each port and drinks with meals, so the price per night looks higher than on an ocean ship but covers more.
The Danube between Passau, Vienna and Budapest is the classic first river cruise: three capital-city stops in a week, the Wachau Valley vineyards and plenty of departures from almost every line. The Rhine, with its castles and Christmas markets, is the usual second choice.
On most European river lines, the fare covers your cabin, all meals, Wi-Fi and a guided excursion in most ports, and many include wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Uniworld, Scenic and Tauck go further and include all drinks and gratuities; at the value end, check whether excursions and tips are extra.
May, June, September and October give mild weather and full sailing schedules. Late March to early May is tulip season on Dutch and Belgian waterways, autumn brings the grape harvest, and late November to December is Christmas market season on the Rhine and Danube.
Low water in late summer and autumn, or high water after heavy rain, can stop ships passing certain stretches. Lines usually keep the trip running by swapping guests between two ships, replacing a stretch with coaches or staying docked and running excursions by bus, rather than canceling outright.

Mostly not. Viking does not accept guests under 18, and most other lines have no kids' clubs or pools for children. Exceptions are family-themed departures on some lines in summer, such as Tauck's family sailings and AmaWaterways' departures with Adventures by Disney.
A French balcony is a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass door with a railing, but no space to step out and sit. It gives you fresh air and a full view of the river; a full balcony adds a small outdoor seating area and costs more.
Yes, most river lines charge solo travelers a supplement, because cabins are designed for two. Several lines periodically reduce or waive the supplement on selected departures, often in shoulder season, so it pays to compare several sailings rather than accept the first quote.
