EKTA
Online travel insurer for international travelers with medical, evacuation and trip-cancellation cover, bought in minutes before departure.
Policies are priced on the trip cost you insure and the oldest traveler's age. Enter the total you would lose if you canceled (cruise fare, flights, hotels, excursions paid upfront).
Typical premium
$90 – $144
About 5–8% of the trip cost for 2 travelers. Real quotes depend on your state or country of residence, trip length and the plan's medical limits; a medical-only plan without cancellation cover is usually far cheaper.
Norwegian Cruise Line offers its own plan, NCL BookSafe Travel Protection, as an optional extra when you book. Because it is offered in the booking flow, it is the plan many NCL guests end up with by default.
What these cruise-line plans typically look like:
The limits, exclusions and refund rules are in the plan document. Check the plan document for BookSafe before you compare it with anything else.
A policy you buy from an insurer covers the same core events, trip cancellation, interruption, medical treatment, evacuation and baggage, but it can be adjusted:
| Question | Cruise-line plan | Third-party policy |
|---|---|---|
| Where do I buy it? | From NCL, with the booking | From an insurer or marketplace |
| How is it priced? | Typically by fare band, per guest | Typically by trip cost, age, residence and options |
| Cancellation refund | Often partly as cruise credit; check the plan document | Typically cash for covered reasons |
| Medical and evacuation limits | Set by the plan | You choose them |
| Independently booked flights | Typically not included | Included if added to the insured cost |
| Cancel for any reason | Check the plan document | Often available, bought early |
| Last chance to buy | Final payment | Before departure; waivers and CFAR earlier |
In our price data NCL's median cheapest fare is €1,011 per person for a 7-night cruise, and the cheapest fare we hold is €183 per person. Seven nights is NCL's standard length, from Caribbean and Bermuda runs to Alaska and the Mediterranean.
Using the rule of thumb that a comprehensive policy costs about 4–10% of the insured trip cost:
The low end fits younger travelers with standard cover. Cancel for any reason, higher medical limits and older ages move the price up.
Tip: If you add specialty dining or excursions before you sail and they are non-refundable, include them in the insured total too.
Medicare does not cover you at sea or abroad, and many domestic health plans pay little or nothing outside your home country. On board, the ship's medical center charges for treatment and bills you.
The bigger risk is evacuation. Getting a patient off a ship and to a hospital can cost tens of thousands of dollars, and on a cruise to Alaska or across the Atlantic that is more likely to involve a long flight. Whatever cover you choose, find the evacuation limit in the plan document and decide whether it is enough.
There is no single answer, because the two kinds of cover solve different problems. BookSafe is the easy option: one purchase, tied to the reservation, handled by the line. A third-party policy takes more effort but can be fitted around your trip and your health.
Put the same four questions to each quote:
If both quotes answer these the same way, price becomes the tiebreaker. If they do not, price is the wrong place to start.
Know the fare before you insure it. Set a price alert on your sailing and check NCL deals for current reductions before final payment.

Policies differ by country of residence and insurer, so read the plan document before buying.
NCL BookSafe Travel Protection is the optional travel protection plan Norwegian Cruise Line offers with a booking. Like other cruise-line plans it typically combines cancellation and interruption cover with medical and assistance benefits, priced per guest by fare band. The plan document lists the actual benefits and limits.
It depends on what you need. BookSafe is convenient and tied to the booking, while a third-party policy lets you choose medical limits, add cancel for any reason and cover flights you booked yourself. Compare both on refund type, medical limits and what parts of the trip they protect.
Cruise-line plans are typically sold up to final payment and not after. If you want a pre-existing condition waiver or cancel-for-any-reason cover from a third-party insurer, buy within the window after your first deposit, which usually comes well before final payment.
Cruise-line plans often return part of a cancellation refund as future cruise credit, depending on the reason for canceling. Check the BookSafe plan document to see how each type of cancellation is settled.
Both cruise-line plans and third-party policies typically cover sailings to Alaska, but remote ports make medical evacuation more likely to be needed and more expensive, so the evacuation limit matters. Check the limit in the plan document of whichever cover you buy.

A cruise-line plan typically protects what you booked with the line. Flights and hotels bought elsewhere may not be covered, while a third-party policy can include them if you add their cost to the insured trip total.
